Semaglutide vs. Tirzepatide: Which GLP-1 Medication Is Right for You?

With multiple GLP-1 medications now available for weight management, patients and healthcare providers face an important decision: which medication offers the best balance of efficacy, tolerability, and accessibility?

    Mechanism of Action

Semaglutide works as a single GLP-1 receptor agonist, while tirzepatide is a dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist. This dual mechanism may contribute to tirzepatide's somewhat greater weight loss efficacy in clinical trials.

    Head-to-Head Efficacy

Clinical data suggests that tirzepatide may produce modestly greater weight loss compared to semaglutide. In the SURMOUNT trials, the highest dose of tirzepatide produced an average weight loss of 22.5%, compared to 14.9% with semaglutide in the STEP trials.

However, direct comparison should be approached with caution, as the trials had different patient populations and study designs.

    Cost and Insurance Coverage

Both medications carry significant out-of-pocket costs without insurance coverage. Patients should work with their healthcare team and insurance providers to understand coverage options.
